The Dean’s Weekly Message – 8 November 2026

Let us Remember

There are over thirty conflicts throughout the world at the present time. Those most prominent in our mainstream news channels are in Ukraine, Israel/Palestine and Iran. The reports and pictures we have seen bring home to us all the horror and devastation of terrorism, war and conflict and the terrible impact it has on those who are caught up in the midst of these situations. The purpose behind Remembrance Sunday was never to glorify war to initially remember those who fell in the great war and as time has gone on all those who died in the major conflicts that have affected the world and to pray and work for peace. As we remember the Fallen in war in prayer let us also pray for those in positions of leadership that they make wise and measured decisions in situations of terrorism and defence of their country and peoples.

‘They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them’

Next Saturday Archbishop Sherrington will celebrate the Annual Mass for Deceased Clergy in the Crypt at 12noon. It is an opportunity for clergy and people to remember and pray for those priests and deacons who have died over the course of this year. At the beginning of December we will be finally at the stage of being able to launch the plans and proposals for the new Welcome Centre for the Cathedral. This is the intended replacement building for the site of the former café and gift shop which was closed five years ago due to major building problems. The New Welcome Centre will encompass much more than the previous building providing a new entrance to the Cathedral from the street level, wider facilities than we had before and a new external garden and processional ramp. The two Public Consultation days are on Wednesday 2nd December from 3-7pm and on Sunday from 12 midday- 3pm and on both days these will be held in the Gibberd Room at the Cathedral. There will be plans available, a physical model and computerised CGI images of the proposed building internally and externally with the opportunity to speak to the various consultants involved in the scheme.
