Make a difference in the heart of Liverpool

A person with short reddish hair and a red coat stands alone facing the altar inside a large church, framed by tall blue stained-glass columns, a crucifix above the sanctuary and a patterned marble floor.
A smiling older woman in a pink jumper, patterned scarf and black quilted vest stands behind a reception desk with a beige crossbody bag and glasses on the counter as two older visitors—one blurred man holding a leaflet—talk to her.

The Guild of Guides and Welcomers

The Guild of Guides provides a warm welcome to visitors from across the world, offering guided tours and answering questions about the Cathedral’s history, art and faith. Guides work in friendly teams on a rota, ensuring visitors always receive a personal welcome.

Training is provided, and you will learn on the job with the support of experienced volunteers.

“I love being a Cathedral Guide – it’s such an honour.

I enjoy meeting our wonderful visitors, showing them around our beautiful Cathedral, and seeing their positive reactions. We meet so many amazing people, each with their own story to tell – it truly is a privilege.”

Cathedral Servers

The Cathedral Servers are a dedicated group of volunteers, young and old, who assist at weekend and special Masses in the Cathedral and Crypt. Many of our younger servers begin at St Nicholas’ Primary School or within the Cathedral parish, and receive training before joining regular services.

After a year of service, young servers are awarded their Guild of St Stephen bronze medals in recognition of their commitment and dedication.

Cathedral Stewards

The Guild of Stewards represents the welcoming face of the Cathedral during services and events. Stewards greet visitors, distribute service sheets, assist with seating and collections, and help ensure services run smoothly.

No experience is required as full training and support are provided. We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds who can offer a warm and friendly presence at our services.

Cathedral Readers

Our Readers play an important part in every service, sharing Scripture and helping to bring the Word of God to life for the congregation. We welcome confident speakers of all ages and backgrounds who can commit to a regular rota. Guidance and support are provided.

Cathedral Education Service

The Education Service is a team of experienced, qualified teachers who bring the Cathedral’s story to life for thousands of schoolchildren each year. Volunteers help pupils explore faith, art and architecture in a joyful and interactive way.

If you are a qualified teacher, retired, part-time or active, and would like to share your love of learning in a unique setting, we would love to hear from you.

“It is a joy to be part of the Education Service at the cathedral.

To introduce children and young people to the awe and wonder of this beautiful and spiritual place is a privilege. I really enjoy working with a team of lively, knowledgeable colleagues who bring the place and history of the cathedral to life. Sharing the work of wonderful artists such as John Piper, Ceri Richards and Sean Rice for me connects the creative human spirit with the Holy Spirit. I see myself as very fortunate.”
