The Lutyens’ Crypt

Step into one of Liverpool’s most remarkable hidden spaces beneath the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Symmetrical chapel interior with rows of wooden pews leading to a central baptismal font beneath a large arched stained-glass window with a sunburst radial pattern, framed by curved brick vaults and warm hanging lights.

Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in the 1930s, the Crypt is all that remains of his ambitious plan for a vast cathedral that would have rivalled St Peter’s in Rome. Though the full design was never realised, the space itself is extraordinary.

Walking among the deep purple bricks and soaring vaulted ceilings, you can almost imagine Lutyens’ vision rising above you. The atmosphere is both grand and intimate, offering a rare chance to explore a piece of the city’s hidden architectural history.

Often described as Liverpool’s third cathedral, the Lutyens’ Crypt reveals the scale of Lutyens’ ambition while standing as a striking and atmospheric landmark.

It is a place to marvel at craftsmanship, reflect quietly, and experience the Cathedral in a way few have the chance to.

The Treasury

Within the Crypt, the Cathedral Treasury houses a stunning collection of sacred vessels, vestments, and artefacts spanning centuries of faith and craftsmanship.

Visitors can admire silver chalices, processional crosses, and richly embroidered vestments once used in major liturgies. Each piece tells its own story and offers a glimpse into the living heritage of the Cathedral and the wider Catholic community.

The Treasury is open to all visitors exploring the Crypt and provides a space for quiet reflection and discovery.

An Unforgettable Setting

The Lutyens’ Crypt and Treasury can also be booked for special occasions, including concerts, award ceremonies, and private and corporate events.

Hosting an event here offers something truly memorable: the chance to experience this remarkable space in a new light, surrounded by history, atmosphere, and breathtaking architecture.
