Education at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral

An elderly man in a patterned sweater and glasses gestures toward a tall bronze sculpture of a bearded, muscular figure rising above a ram and twisted branches in a dim gallery lit by a row of small colourful stained-glass windows.

Whether as an iconic place of worship, a building of historical significance, or a space of outstanding architectural and artistic interest, a visit can deeply enrich education for pupils at school, college, or university.

Learning opportunities

Our Education Service welcomes over 4,000 school and college pupils each year. Qualified teaching staff with years of experience provide a warm welcome for all age groups and abilities.

We offer a comprehensive programme covering a wide range of subjects, from Foundation Stage to Sixth Form and beyond.

Visits can last for a minimum of one hour with an optimum duration of 90 minutes recommended.

Tailored visits

We can cover areas linked directly to the National Curriculum and RE specifications, or create bespoke visits tailored to your group’s needs.

Teachers are encouraged to contact the Education team for advice on possible topics and ideas for learning outside the classroom.

For older students, including undergraduates, the Cathedral provides a rich resource for art, architecture, history, and cultural studies. Students may explore symbolism within the Cathedral’s structure, fabric, and function, or study its impact on music, choreography, and light art.

Booking is essential. We recommend providing at least two months’ notice, where possible. Visits are free, though donations are gratefully received to support the Cathedral.

Schools must adhere to statutory adult-to-child ratios:

  • Years 1–3: 1 adult per 6 children
  • Years 4–6: 1 adult per 10 children
  • Years 7 and above: 1 adult per 15 children

Cathedral staff cannot be included in these ratios. All Education staff have enhanced DBS clearance.

The use of the Gibberd Room costs £10, and visits to the Lutyens Crypt are charged at £5 per person.
