About the Friends

The Friends play a special part in the life of the Metropolitan Cathedral. Their support helps the Cathedral remain a place of beauty, prayer, and music, welcoming everyone who comes through its doors.

Becoming a Friend means helping to care for this magnificent Grade I listed building, keeping it alive as a place of worship and community.

Friends give their support, both financial and practical, to preserve and develop the Cathedral so it can continue to inspire faith and creativity for generations to come.

Recent Work

The Friends have recently supported a range of important projects, including:

  • The plinths and lighting in the Chapel of Mercy, which holds the Dooley Works of Art
  • The hangings depicting the coats of arms of Archbishop John Sherrington and Pope Leo XIV on display in the Cathedral
  • The Architects’ Plaque commemorating Gibberd and Lutyens in the main entrance

Their generosity continues to make a real difference to the life of the Cathedral and all who visit.

“Being part of the Friends of the Cathedral has been a joy and a privilege.

Over the years, we’ve helped the Cathedral commission special items and mark important moments in its history, including the new processional cross and the memorial plaque honouring architects Lutyens and Gibberd. These are things that simply wouldn’t be possible through day-to-day funds alone. I’ve been very happy to play a small part in helping the Cathedral flourish for future generations.”

Metropolitan Cathedral
