Welcome to the Apostolic Nuncio
During this week we welcome Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendia, the Apostolic Nuncio to England, Wales and Scotland to the Liverpool Archdiocese. He will be here from Wednesday evening until Sunday afternoon on a formal visitation to learn more about the Archdiocese and its people. On Thursday he will be visiting a few of our Catholic Schools and meeting children and staff. On Friday he will be visiting Nugent and one or two other social action schemes that the Diocese is involved in. Later that afternoon he will be welcomed to Liverpool Cathedral for Evensong. On Saturday he will preside at a Mass of Thanksgiving in recognition of the valuable contribution that religious orders have made by their presence and pastoral work within the Diocese. On Sunday he will visit the Cathedral presiding at Solemn Mass at 11am, joining us for lunch in Cathedral House, attending Choral Evening Prayer at 3pm and meeting all who wish to come for this service afterwards at a drinks reception in the Crypt. Afterwards Archbishop Buendia will be returning home to London for a well-earned rest and I’m sure Archbishop Sherrington will welcome a rest after being his constant host for the whole period.
The second reading of the ‘Assisted Dying Bill’ will debated and voted on 11th September. There are leaflets at the back of the Cathedral and the Crypt Chapel entitled ‘Assist us to live, not to die’. Please take one home and make your views known by signing and sending to parliament before the bill has its second reading.
The 12.15pm Mass this Thursday will be transferred to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel due to a wedding taking place in the crypt. Next week Our Diocesan Chapter of Canons, the first and oldest chapter in the country, are celebrating their 175th Anniversary this year and the Chapter will gather for a celebratory Mass at 12.15 in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel on Wednesday 17th September to mark the occasion.
We celebrate our Annual Cathedral Community Mass on Sunday 20th September. Following the main holiday period it is an opportunity to begin in September with a welcome and renewal of community life to begin the new season and academic year.
