The Dean’s Weekly Message – 15th June 2025 Posted on Saturday 14 June 2025

Trinity Sunday

Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday honouring the wonderful mystery and love of God – a unity of persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, yet One undivided Unity. The Creed that we profess on most of the Sundays of the year, The Nicene Creed, is the clearest expression of the faith that we share together and expresses what we as catholics and most Christian denominations believe as the authentic expression of our faith. This year Christians across the world celebrate the 1700th Anniversary of the Council of Nicea and the definitive Creed that was declared by this universal church council. The Nicene Creed was originally formulated at the 1st Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church held in Nicea in AD 325 and was later amplified, adopted and authorized as a true expression of the Faith at the 2nd Ecumenical Council in Constantinople in AD 381. The Nicene Creed built upon the profession of faith in the Apostles’ Creed, defending against many of the heresies of the time – the primary and most prominent of which was Arianism. Although Arianism was the most troublesome heresy of the time, it was not the only one. The Nicene Creed was absolutely necessary at the time to ensure that the lex credendi (the rule of faith – what the people believed) would both reflect and reinforce the lex orandi (the rule of prayer – how the people worshiped). Down through the ages Christians have dedicated and sacrificed their lives to remain true to the beliefs we express every week in this Creed. As we celebrate Trinity Sunday may we pause and reflect more deeply upon the Creed that we profess together which is both a prayerful declaration of faith and a personal and communal expression of our way of life.

This week there are two Funeral Masses at 12.15 – on Tuesday and Thursday these masses will be celebrated in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. On Tuesday the Funeral is for Joseph Beach and on Thursday for Ian Redden. May they rest in peace. On Thursday Evening there is a choir concert to raise funds for charity entitled ‘One Heart Concert’ which begins at 6.30pm in the Cathedral and will be compered by Frank Cottrell-Boyce.

We Celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi – the Body and Blood of Christ at masses next weekend.
