The Grand Organ of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral has recently undergone urgent restoration works. The project, which involved removing, cleaning and restoring each of its 4565 individual pipes, took 18 months to complete at a cost of over £1 million. This work was carried out by specialist organ builders Harrison & Harrison Ltd.
The Grand Organ will be officially reopened in Spring 2024 and details of the reopening events will be announced later this year.
The restoration project conserves and protects one of the UK’s most important mid-20th century organs and ensures it can continue to play an integral role in Cathedral life and worship.
The Grand Organ has been heard and enjoyed by millions of visitors, including Queen Elizabeth II and Pope John Paul II, and has been played by some of the world’s most famous organists.
Today, it sits at the heart of the Cathedral’s musical tradition, regularly accompanying our choirs at the many communal and celebratory occasions that take place here.
Its distinctive façade was designed by the Cathedral architect, Sir Fredrick Gibberd, and built by the English organ builders, J W Walker and Sons.
