Explore the Archives this November as we Celebrate Anniversaries Across the Diocese Posted on Thursday 9 November 2017

The Metropolitan Cathedral isn’t alone in celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year. Other churches that opened across the Archdiocese in 1967 were St Cyril in Netherley, St Matthew/St Francis of Assisi in Skelmersdale and Southport’s St John Stone.  To mark this shared anniversary, our Archive department will be cataloguing records and sharing stories from these parishes throughout the month of November.

Each Parish church has a ‘Parish Box’, the contents of which has been stored within the Archives for the past 50 years. These records include correspondence relating to the day to day business of each parish such as visitation returns, accounting records and other administrative activity. They also give us a fascinating glimpse of how the parishes have interacted directly with the Archbishop along with other departments within the Archdiocese.

Throughout November, we’ll be displaying the boxes and using the information uncovered to compile a brief history of each parish, along with creating a definitive list of the Parish Priests.

All are welcome to come and take a look. Access to the archives is included in the entry to the Crypt and Treasury.  Alternatively, to make a special visit please email n.sayer@metcathedral.org.uk
