Buttress appointed to work on Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral new Welcome Centre Posted on Tuesday 1 April 2025

Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral is pleased to announce the appointment of Buttress Architects to develop our new Welcome Centre, the first major project to emerge from the ongoing masterplanning work.

This new facility will replace the former visitor centre and will provide a revitalised, resilient space that enhances the experience of all who visit. It will strengthen our role as a place of faith, heritage, and community, ensuring that we remain a welcoming presence in the city.

Buttress was initially appointed to undertake the first ever Quinquennial Inspection of the Cathedral, gaining an in-depth understanding of our building’s condition. This work led to the development of a strategic masterplan that addresses key priorities, including enhancing the visitor experience and improving our environmental sustainability. The new Welcome Centre will play a vital role in this vision, redefining the visitor journey, improving accessibility, and making better use of our existing spaces.

Working alongside a team of specialist consultants, including Clancy Group, DFC, Enabl, Focus, Hive, IWSA, Max Fordham, Planit, Safer Sphere, and Sutcliffe, Buttress brings expertise in both architecture and heritage conservation.

Matthew Burl, Director at Buttress, said: “This project is an important step in revitalising the Cathedral’s visitor experience. As a landmark of faith and community, the Cathedral holds deep spiritual, cultural, and architectural significance. Our approach is one of careful renewal, preserving its unique character while introducing thoughtful improvements that support its role as a dynamic centre of faith and welcome.”

Monsignor Anthony O’Brien, Cathedral Dean, added: “We are excited to move forward with this project, which will enhance the Cathedral’s role as a place of welcome for all. We look forward to working with Buttress to bring these plans to life.”
