Pentecost Sunday
We conclude the Season of Easter with the Celebration of the Feast of Pentecost this weekend. Pentecost is not only for us a commemoration of the Descent of the Holy Spirit and a Celebration of the birth of the Church but also a special Feast day for our Cathedral and it also evokes memories for many of us of the visit of Saint Pope John Paul 2 who celebrated mass here on this day in 1982. To add to our celebrations this weekend 20 young children from our community made their First Holy Communion on Saturday morning and many of them will be joining us today to receive Holy Communion for the first time at Sunday mass. Also at the Solemn Mass today seven adults will be confirmed by Archbishop Malcolm having undergone a period of preparation. These are all reminders that the Holy Spirit is alive and at work within the church today. May the Spirit of the Lord guide and strengthen us all this day.
We have a filming crew here on one of the weekdays this week for the Railway journeys series presented by Michael Portillo. Normally we are chosen for religious or antiques programmes so this should be an interesting and welcome change. If they are getting a train from Lime Street as part of their journey I hope it will be on time and not cancelled!
Next Saturday afternoon at 2pm the Union of Catholic Mothers will gather for their Annual Diocesan Mass which will be celebrated by Archbishop Malcolm.
