Civic Sunday
This Sunday we extend a warm welcome to all our guests who are attending the Annual Civic Mass at 11am. We are expecting there to be representatives from the many areas of civic and public life from across our region as we pray for our local communities and their needs and all those in positions of authority in public life. The weather forecast is predicting rain for Sunday – I hope that won’t adversely affect the attendance and the wearing of ceremonial robes which add colour and a bit of necessary pomp to the occasion.
On Monday there is a Requiem Mass at 11am for Fr David Melly who was parish priest of Our Lady’s parish Portico and until recently a very popular member of the Archdiocesan Schools Department RE advisory team. His funeral is taking place here at the cathedral just to the limited capacity of his parish church.
The Season of Lent begins this week with the Distribution of Ashes on Wednesday. Based on previous experience we expect large crowds for masses on this day hence the 12.15 and 5.15pm Masses will be celebrated in the main Cathedral and there will be an addition to our normal scheduled mass times –a later Service of the Word at 7.00pm in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
Friday marks the anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and there is a Joint Cathedrals Vigil Service to mark this anniversary and pray for peace. There will be gathering and short service on the Cathedral Piazza at 4.30pm followed by (5pm Mass at our Cathedral) or a Service of Evensong at Liverpool Cathedral at 5.30pm.
