The Grand Organ of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral is currently undergoing urgent renovation works. The project, which involves removing, cleaning and restoring each of its 4565 individual pipes, will take 18 months to complete at a cost of over £1 million.
Along with being one of the UK’s most important examples of mid-20th century English organ building, the organ plays an integral role in Cathedral life and worship.
It has been heard and enjoyed by millions of visitors over the last 54 years, including Queen Elizabeth II and Pope John Paul II, and has been played by some of the world’s most famous organists.
Today, the organ sits at the heart of the Cathedral’s musical tradition. It regularly accompanies our choirs at the many communal and celebratory occasions that take place here.
Its distinctive façade was designed by the Cathedral architect, Sir Fredrick Gibberd, and built by the English organ builders, J W Walker and Sons. The renovation will be carried out by specialist organ builders Harrison & Harrison Ltd of Durham.
