INTRODUCTION
Although relatively young for an English Cathedral Choir, Liverpool´s
Metropolitan Cathedral Choir has in its 40 plus years achieved much,
gaining a reputation both nationally and internationally. Before
the present Cathedral was built, the Choir was formed under its
first director Christopher Symons, to sing at services in the Lutyens´
Cathedral Crypt.
By the time the Cathedral had been built, the Choir´s new
director Philip Duffy, along with his brother Terence, the Cathedral
Organist, had been working hard to prepare for the opening and soon-to-be-busy
life of this new Cathedral. Initially, the Choir only sang at a
few of the weekly services, but over the time the number has increased
(to five each week), along with the Choir´s reputation and
excellence. Many of the Cathedral´s ex-choristers have gone
on to be extremely successful in the world of music.
The Cathedral was the first Catholic cathedral in England to boast an organ
scholarship and remains the only Catholic cathedral choir apart
from Westminster singing almost daily. It has broadcast countless
times on television and radio as well as touring extensively.
